Zlín and Luhačovice Area

Would you like to see a region full of contrasts? If so, you couldn’t have chosen a better destination as the area around the towns of Zlín and Luhačovice offers such a wide-range of experiences. On the one hand there is the regional capital Zlín, a modern centre with much greenery and the town of Tomáš Baťa, one of the greatest Czech entrepreneurs of the early 20th century. Thanks to his vision, ability and cooperation with architects J. Kotěra, F. L. Gahura, M. Lorenc and V. Karfík this once provincial backwater was transformed in just a few years into a unique functionalist urban area, which people now come to admire from all over the world.

But it’s enough just to hop over the nearest hill and you will find yourself in a green land of timber cottages, medieval castles, idyllic ruins and colourful folk customs. Here, in the middle of the woods carpeting the valley formed by the River Šťávnice, you will come across Luhačovice, the largest spa in Moravia and a truly charming place with some very special architecture. And if you like to try local produce, don’t forget Vizovice and the local distillery; a tasting session forms part of the tour here!

Building No 21 aka the Zlín skyscraper – Administrative building No. 21 belonging to the Baťa shoe factory was completed in 1938 by V. Karfík and was one of Europe’s very first high-rise structures. One feature you’ll certainly not find anywhere else in the Czech Republic is the lift, which doubled up as the boss’s office. It measures 6x6m and has a washbasin and air-con! Building No. 21 is now one of the administrative centres for the regional authority.

Zoo in Zlín-Lešná – This modern zoo is divided into geographical areas, meaning that in the course of a day you can travel across Africa, Asia, Australia and America. Particularly popular are the large walk-through exhibitions and the tropical Yucatan hall, as well as pony and camel rides, animal feeding times and the zoo train.

Vizovice – This town is famous for its slivovitz, figures made of Vizovice pastry, the local distillery with its Distillery Land visitors centre and glass production. Nor should you pass up a chance to visit Vizovice Chateau boasting stylishly furnished interiors and a large park.

Luhačovice – This must be one of the most beautiful spa towns in the Czech Republic. Its deservedly good reputation is down to the local mineral water, which possesses curative properties, as well as the architect Dušan Jurkovič and his buildings inspired by the folk architecture of the Wallachian and Kysuce regions. Numerous spa houses, a colonnade and a large spa park complete the picture.
