Moravian Wallachia

This is a region of wooded mountainsides and deep-cleft valleys, verdant slopes, old timber cottages, folk traditions and some authentic cuisine – cabbage soup, potato cakes, slivovitz and the region’s famous tarts made with wheat flour and with fillings of farmer’s cheese, poppy seeds, jam and pear spread. Almost all year round you can try these treats at Rožnov’s open-air museum, where for almost a century the finest examples of local folk architecture have been gathered.

Many also associate the Wallach Region with mythical Mount Radhošť and its menacing statue of the pagan god Radegast, as well as  romantic buildings designed by Dušan Jurkovič at Pustevny, wooden churches, abandoned alpine villages with views across the Vsetín, Hostýn and Vizovice Hills and the Javorník Mountains, summer fun by Bystřička and Horní Bečva reservoirs and winter sports on the local downhill skiing slopes.

Wallach Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm – The oldest and largest museum of its kind in central Europe was founded in 1924. The three sections – Timber Town, Wallachian Village and Mill Valley – contain almost 120 buildings. All year round there are demonstrations of traditional crafts and chances to taste Wallachian specialities.

Pustevny – Standing at a height of 1,018m, the two mountain chalets here named Maměnka and Libušín were built in 1894 by architect Dušan Jurkovič in the folk style of architecture inspired by the Wallach and Kysuce regions. Today they house a restaurant and a hotel.

Tapestry workshop in Valašské Meziříčí – The only workshop of its kind in Moravia and Silesia involved in restoring period tapestries and creating new pieces with modern themes. In addition to the tour there’s also a gallery and a coffee shop.
