Slovácko Area

The Slovácko Region isn’t just about vibrant folk customs, cimbal music and colourful costumes, although these are, of course, integral aspects of the area. You’ll also find large areas of deciduous forest on the slopes of the Chřiby Hills, the legendary orchid meadows of the White Carpathian Mountains and alluvial plains extending along the wide valley of the River Morava. You can also look forward to noble chateaux, medieval castles and the sights of Staré Město, Velehrad and Modrá, all of which will send you back in time to the 9th century and the heyday of the Great Moravian Empire.

Travelling in the Slovácko region is also about good honest food, slivovitz and wine. And if you are heading this way, remember that the best time to do so is during one of the region’s unique folklore events, be it the Ride of the Kings, a Slovácko feast, wine tastings or wine festivals. At these times the region’s whitewashed houses adorned with colourful Slovácko decoration, vineyards and wine cellars come to life creating a unique atmosphere, which you won’t forget in a hurry.

Buchlov Castle – This medieval castle contains natural history and Egyptian exhibitions. The tour includes the viewing tower and it’s also possible to visit the nearby Chapel of St Barbora.

Buchlovice Chateau – This Baroque chateau built in the style of an Italian villa is set in French gardens and English park. Fuchsia and art shows take place here and you can also visit a special wild animal rescue centre and a wine cellar.

Baťa Canal – This unique, historical waterway connected to the River Morava is navigable from Otrokovice to Sudoměřice. There are boat hire centres renting out crafts of all types and sizes as well as organised group and leisure cruises, which include sightseeing and gastronomic events on board. On the banks of the Baťa Canal cyclists can now use a new 80km-long cycle path.

Monument to the Great Moravian Empire in Staré Město – This new multimedia exhibition acquaints visitors with archaeological finds from the surrounding area and with the everyday life of the Slavs in the early medieval period.

Modrá Open-Air Archaeological Museum  – This open-air museum is located on the site of a former settlement dating from the time of the Great Moravian Empire. Various events with a period theme examine the life of the Czechs’ forebears and their everyday lives.

Velehrad – With its richly decorated Basilica of the Virgin and Sts Cyril and Methodius, this Baroque monastery is an important spiritual centre. Among other things visitors can see a sculpture collection and passageways beneath the basilica where the original foundations of the Romanesque and Gothic monastery building from the early 13th century are visible.

Ride of the Kings in Vlčnov – The oldest and best known folk event in the Slovácko Region takes place every year on the last weekend in May. The Ride of the Kings takes place in exquisite Slovácko costumes and there are the famous Vlčnov doughnuts to eat and slivovitz and local wines to drink.
