Kroměříž Area

Kroměříž, a town of historical sights, art and culture, has been dubbed the Athens of the Haná area. The biggest draw is the UNESCO-listed Archbishop’s Palace boasting some unique gardens, but there are many other places worth a visit such as the Bishop’s Mint containing a collection of ecclesiastical coins and medals, the Baroque Church of St John the Baptist with its Rococo interiors, and the house on the main square with its Renaissance entrance, now home to the Kroměříž Regional Museum and the Max Švabinský Monument.

And when you grow tired of the city streets, why not head out into the countryside – perhaps via Holešov and its Jewish sites and Svatý Hostýn, the most popular pilgrimage site in Moravia, to the Hostýnské Hills. Here you’ll find the characterful village of Rusava with its timber cottages, a swimming pool heated using solar power and a small museum. There’s also a dense network of marked cycling and hiking trails and Tesák and Troják hills, good acquaintances of anyone into winter sports in this country.

Archbishop’s Palace in Kroměříž – The UNESCO-listed erstwhile summer residence of the Olomouc archbishops contains a picture gallery and a large library. The Meeting Hall is regarded as one of the most attractive Rococo interiors in the Czech Republic and even formed the backdrop for the film Amadeus directed by Miloš Forman.

Podzámecká Garden – Once a vegetable and flower garden, this plot of land was transformed in the 17th century into an exquisite set of Baroque gardens in perfect architectural harmony with the chateau. Precious plants and shrubs grow beside streams, ponds, follies and the original sculptural decoration.

Květná Garden – When the town was being rebuilt following the Thirty Years’ War, Italian architects F. Luchese and P. G. Tencalla created a late Renaissance garden on a plot of barren, swampy land outside the town walls. The garden is divided in two; in the centre of the northern part stands a rotunda, some grottos and the Focault pendulum; the southern section of the garden is divided into two rectangles containing ponds, fountains and two manmade hills. The dominating feature of the Květná Garden is the 244m-long colonnade housing statues of Greek and Roman gods; there are also two mazes and a palm house.

Pilgrimage Basilica at Svatý Hostýn – Thanks to its location on the Haná plains, 735m-high Mount Hostýn and the pilgrimage Basilica of the Virgin are sometimes called the lighthouse of Moravia. In addition to the church you’ll also find a viewing tower, a chapel, a wind turbine and two ways of the cross. One of these was created by architect Dušan Jurkovič, who was inspired by the folk architecture of the Wallach region.
