East Moravia
Eastern Moravia is often associated with a marketing slogan which speaks of the ‘magic of diversity’. This is no exaggeration as each of the four tourist regions in the area is very different and often just their names provide a guarantee of days well spent at leisure.
Judge for yourself – who in this country doesn’t know the Wallach Region, its lofty peaks, verdant valleys, its slopes dotted with timber cottages and inimitable customs and traditions. For fans of folk celebrations, wine and colourful costumes there is the Slovácko region. The Zlín District and the forests around Luhačovice are places to become acquainted with the White Carpathian Mountains and the region’s spa waters as well as distinctive functionalist architecture; and last but not least the Kroměříž District offers flamboyant, UNESCO-listed chateau interiors and gardens and Svatý Hostýn, one of the best known pilgrimage sites in the country. And if you’re looking for something a bit different (and are not afraid of water) then what about the Baťa Canal – nowhere else in the country can you enjoy several days of slow travel through ever-changing landscapes!
Zoo and chateau Zlín-Lešná – Occupying the park around an idyllic chateau, this zoo is divided up into the different continents. The highlights are the large walk-through aviary and a section containing several different species of animal. Children can enjoy pony and camel rides and a special train tours the zoo. There’s also a rope centre and several eateries.
Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm – The largest and oldest open-air museum in central Europe has three different sections: the Timber Town in the municipal park, the Wallachian Village and the Mill Valley on a nearby hillside. This trip into the past is enhanced with traditional handicrafts and various special events.
Pustevny – Near the upper station belonging to the cable car from Trojanovice to Pustevny stand two picturesque mountain chalets called Maměnka and Libušín, both designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič in his folk style and inspired by the architecture of the Wallachian region and Kysuce. They are now in the care of the Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm and contain a restaurant and a hotel.
Radhošť – A ridge path leads from Pustevny to the top of sacred Mount Radhošť (1,129m). Along the way you will spot the Cyrilka viewing pavilion, the famous statue of the pagan god Radegast, the timber pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Sts Cyril and Methodius, statues of both the saints and places with incredible views. Did you know that one of the foundation stones for Prague’s National Theatre came from Radhošť?
The RUDOLF JELÍNEK Co. and the Distillery Land visitors centre in Vizovice – This distillery tour includes a short film on brandy production in the Wallach region, a look at modern distilling processes, a visit to a whisky exhibition and the bottling room and a trip to the company shop. Some of the beverages made here can even be sampled.
Luhačovice – Boasting mineral-rich springs with curative properties, this well known Moravian spa town was given its inimitable character at the turn of the century by architect Dušan Jurkovič, designer of a range of buildings inspired by the folk architecture of the Wallach and Kysuce regions. The ambience is enhanced by numerous spa houses, a colonnade and a large spa park.
Buchlovice Chateau – Built in the style of an Italian Baroque villa from the late 17th century, this chateau has richly decorated and luxuriously furnished interiors and is set in a terraced garden laid out in the French style which gradually morphs into an English park.
Velehrad – This Baroque basilica and adjoining former Cistercian monastery form an important place of pilgrimage and spiritual centre. The main Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage takes place annually on 5th July.
