Králický Sněžník Area
Things aren’t always what they seem – getting to know the smallest of the country’s ‘tourist regions’ may take more effort than exploring other, much larger places. The majestic Králický Sněžník rises above five villages to height of 1,424m, and anyone who fancies admiring the beauty of the surrounding area from above can tackle the trail to the top rising several hundred metres.
In Czech the name of this mountain, the third highest in the Czech Republic, gives away the fact that it rises near the town of Králíky and that snow covers the peak for a long time – up to eight months a year! Along with other peaks in the area - Jeřáb and Suchý vrch - this is one of only a handful of places where, when the weather plays ball, you can see the two highest points in the country - Mount Sněžka at 1,602m above sea level, and the manmade antenna atop the highest peak in Moravia, Praděd, at 1,638m.
Source of the River Morava – The Králický Sněžník, divided between Europe’s two main watersheds, has been dubbed ‘the roof of Europe’. Just below the summit at a height of 1,380m we find the source of the River Morava, which has been made to look like a well.
Králíky Military Museum – Located within the Czechoslovak defensive line dating from 1935–1938, this museum has displays of weaponry, ammunition, hand weapons, uniforms, photographs and various pieces of documentation; various special events take place on a regular basis.
Hůrka artillery position – This artillery position can be found on the northern outskirts of the town of Králíky. Some of its unique features include a narrow-gauge railway, a locomotive complete with wagons and a fully functional lift for transferring ammunition wagons.
Mary’s Mount pilgrimage site at Dolní Hedeč – This grand Baroque monastery includes the Church of the Virgin Mary, a set of cloisters, the chapel of the Holy Steps, a spring, a cemetery and a pilgrim hospice, and can be found on Mary’s Mount above the town of Králíky. The huge 18th-century timber sculptures, which originally stood on the way of the cross from Králíky to Hedeč, are now installed in the Church of St Nicholas in Vraclav.
