Chrudim – Hlinsko Area
The welcoming landscape of the Železné Mountains, where nothing is too high or too distant, and everything is within easy reach – that’s how you could characterise this area where you can admire the wonders of the East Bohemian countryside in all their glory. This is an area of natural beauty and nature reserves and with a rich folk past. In addition to the region’s potters there were once many glassmakers and woodcarvers who made toys for children from the good quality wood sourced from the Žďárské Hills and the Železné Mountains.
The traditional crafts and skills of our forebears can also be experienced at the open-air museum at Veselý Kopec, at the exceptional Puppet Museum in Chrudim and on a trip around the Seč reservoir, one of the most popular leisure areas in East Bohemia. In several other places you can also learn about horse breeding traditions around Chrudim and Hlinsko; it’s no coincidence that the Železné Mountains offer one of the densest networks of bridleways in the country.
Veselý Kopec – This open-air museum boasting around 30 buildings is meant to resemble a shepherds’ community in the Žďárské Hills or the Železné Mountains. You can see farmhouses, a gamekeeper’s lodge, belfries, barns, a mill, a sawmill, workshops, drying rooms and even a travelling puppet theatre. The open-air museum is part of the Highlands Folk Architecture Collection.
Svojanov Castle – Founded in the mid 13th century by King Přemysl Otakar II, this castle boasts renovated interiors, views of the surrounding area and romantic walks in the gardens contained within Gothic walls.
Lichnice Castle – These Gothic castle ruins stand atop a hill in the Železné Mountains. Beneath the castle you’ll discover the Lovětínská Gorge, Peklo Valley and a large area of beech and alder growing next to the local streams.
In the footsteps of the Celts into the Železné Mountains– Thisexhibition installed at the Renaissance chateau in Nasavrky examines the history and everyday life of the Celts. In addition to period crafts and other themed exhibitions, there are also displays of archaeological finds from the Hradiště u Nasavrk hill fort. From the chateau to the fort there is a 9.5km path called the Celtic Trail.
