You’ll also discover the Javoříčské, Mladečské and Zbrašovské caves and the Hranická Abyss, the deepest in central Europe. Olomouc’s Art Museum, the Carriage Museum in Čechy pod Kosířem, the arboretum in Bílá Lhota and fairytale Bouzov Castle also make fascinating days out. You can also see Central Moravia from one of several viewing towers or from a raft or boat floating along the River Morava.
Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc – This Baroque, 32m-high column on Horní Square was completed in 1754 and consecrated in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa herself. The column has been listed by UNESCO since the year 2000.
Archdiocese Museum in Olomouc – This museum of art dating from the 12th to the 18th century is housed in the Přemyslid Castle near the
Cathedral of St Wenceslas and is a branch of the city’s
Art Museum. The permanent exhibition is made up of works from the Romanesque period to the Baroque, and include the famous Šternberk Madonna and a golden carriage which belonged to Bishop Troyer.
Olomouc Zoo – The city’s zoo at
Svatý Kopeček promises a glimpse of over 400 species and keeps some very rare animals indeed. One section is given over to bats, and there is a huge aquarium and a walk-through macaque enclosure, which you pass through on a raised platform. A sightseeing train gets you round the zoo and there’s also a rope park and a viewing tower.
Šternberk – Among the sights of this ancient town, the
castle and Church of the Annunciation attached to the former Augustine Monastery stand out for particular attention. The tour takes in the dank Gothic cellars and the Baroque halls. The summer swimming area and water slide is the best place for some serious relaxation, and the annual Ecce Homo European Championship in uphill driving for sports cars and classic vehicles takes place here on a 7,800m-long track.
Bouzov Castle – This romantic, fairytale castle was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century for the grand master of the Teutonic Knights. There are several tours to choose from including one which visits the tower. You’ll also see the period entertainment area below the castle with a 15m-high Trojan Horse, which serves as a gallery. You can also engage in a bit of
carting.
