Krušné Mountains and Their Foothills

Mountain peaks, deep forests, remote slopes, people, culture and history have all given the Krušné Mountains and the surrounding area their inimitable character. The countless possibilities which the area offers visitors are enticing indeed: cycling, hiking, winter sports and increasingly popular extreme sports and climbing in the vast alpine areas can be combined with visits to towns in the surrounding area and spa centres such as those in Ústí nad Labem, Bílina, Teplice, Most and Chomutov.

A break here can be brought to life with a trip to chateaux at Duchcov, Jezeří a Červený hrádek or to the zoo. There are also several interesting pieces of technical and industrial heritage to look forward to, some of them the remnants of a once proud iron ore mining tradition and the coal mining industry. There are also interesting wines to be tasted at the Chrámce Vineyard. Grapes have been grown in the terraced vineyards on the side of Hněvín Hill since the 11th century and one very rare sight in today’s wine producing world are vineyards planted on slag heaps created by Most’s mines.

Střekov Castle – These romantic Gothic castle ruins boast ramparts, a tower, a palace, a chapel, the Knight’s Hall and a museum. In the 19th century the castle inspired Wagner to compose the opera Tannhäuser.

Most – Part of the town was swallowed up by opencast brown coal mines. This led to the Church of the Virgin being moved 841m from its original site to where it stands today. Other attractions include the Aquadrom water park, the racing track - a special course measuring 4.148km which hosts motorbike, lorry and other vehicle races – and a hippodrome, the only one in the country with a 1.2km-long straight track.

Zubrnice Museum of Folk Architecture – One of the newest open-air museums in the country is actually part of the village. Near the village, on the former Velké Březno–Zubrnice line, stands the railway station housing a small railway museum.

Duchcov Chateau – The main attraction at this Baroque and neo-Classical pile is the exhibition dedicated to Giacoma Casanova, housed in the actual rooms he inhabited for 13 years at the end of his life. It was here he penned his world famous memoirs.

Klášterec nad Ohří – This town has a neo-Gothic chateau housing collections of Chinese, Japanese and medieval porcelain. The viewing tower and the nearby church containing the Thun family mausoleum are also accessible to the public. The chateau is set in parkland with a sala terrena and works of Baroque sculpture. The town also boasts a summer water park and the Evženie Spa offering a full range of wellness procedures.
