Bohemian Switzerland

Hiking chalets, restaurants, walking trails, old stone viewing towers and numerous viewing points – all reasons why this unique place of natural beauty comprised of sandstone rock formations is one of the most popular day-trip destinations. The main attractions in the Czech Switzerland include the Pravčická Gate and a cruise through gorges on the River Kamenice near Hřensko.

Remarkable views of the rock formations and the canyon formed by the River Elbe can be had from the Jetřichovické Rocks and viewing points called Marie’s Cliffs, Rudolf’s Cliffs and Vilemína’s Cliffs, as well as from a number of viewing towers such as Vlčí hora, Tanečnice and the tower atop Děčínský Sněžník. Places of natural beauty shouldn’t however take the limelight off other interesting places such as the chateau in Benešov nad Ploučnicí, the old pilgrimage site at Křížová hora, the town of Rumburk boasting the northernmost loreta chapel in the Czech lands or Děčín, the region’s epicentre where you’ll discover an elegant chateau, a zoo and several noteworthy bridges.

Pravčická Gate – The symbol and dominating feature of the Czech Switzerland National Park, this is the largest natural stone arch in central Europe. The arch reaches a height of 16m, is 3m thick and 7–8m wide. At the nearby Sokolí hnízdo restaurant there is a small exhibition on this natural feature.

Chateau Benešov nad Ploučnicí – This is a chateau complex where late Gothic sits alongside the Saxon Renaissance style, unusual for Bohemia. The tour offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the minor nobility in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Chateau in Děčín – Originally a Přemyslid dynasty castle atop a cliff above the Elbe, the structure’s current appearance dates from the late 18th century. The chateau is set in parkland and gardens; of particular note is the Baroque Rose Garden boasting a very special ambience.

Zoo and Paradise Islands exhibition in Děčín – One ticket gains you access to the zoo, which focuses on rearing lesser known and highly endangered species, and the aquarium. Paradise Islands is the largest sea aquarium in North Bohemia, and the tour is like sailing around the world.
