Těšínské Slezsko Area
This area in the northeast tip of the country has witnessed many border shifts as the political situation has changed over time. This has bequeathed the area regional traditions belonging to three countries – the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.
All of these ethnic communities have preserved their particular dialects, vibrant folk customs, distinctive cuisines and exciting festivals, which best reveal the true character of this part of Silesia. These take place all over the area, even in the historical mining towns of Bohumín, Orlová, Karviná, Havířov, Český Těšín (divided from Polish Cieszyn by the slow-moving River Olše) and in the industrial town of Třinec, beyond which loom the slopes of the Těšín Beskydy Mountains. You’ll also discover attractive winter resorts, unique timber churches and several rare sites such as the crooked Church of St Peter of Alcantara in Karviná and picturesque examples of folk architecture such as the wooden houses in the middle of the modern town of Havířov.
Fryštát Chateau in Karviná – This Empire chateau is the highlight of the town, with tours providing an insight into the way of life of the last owners, the Larisch-Mönnich family. The interiors oozing with 19th century character are the subject of two tours; a third is dedicated to Czech works of art.
Mionší Forest near Dolní Lomná – This is the largest area of naturally growing Carpathian-type spruce and beech forest in the country. A 7km-long trail with 10 info points leads through the forest and is accessible from June until September.
Archeopark in Chotěbuz-Podobora – This archaeological attraction occupies the site of a Slavic fort which stood here from the mid 8th century until the 11th century. The fort is slowly being recreated with exclusively period materials and methods being used throughout. The replica fortress is set to open in 2012.
Darkov – This spa uses iodine and bromide-rich mineral water in its treatments for musculo-skeletal, nerve-related and circulatory ailments as well as post-operative care. The large spa park adds to the pleasant ambience and contains a number of works of art and fountains.
