Odra Lowlands

Even though the upper reaches of the Oder are not navigable, the river still dominates the region. Its capricious nature forces it to leave its bed and change its course slightly every year, slightly spoiling its reputation as a lazily rolling stream, but makes it a popular spot for birds and small water animals.

The gradual, never-ending emergence of new pools and dead branches in the Oder’s fluvial plain is a unique phenomenon in the Czech Republic, and the meandering stream with riverside vegetation makes the Oder one of the few rivers that fulfills all of its landscape and environmental functions. The Oder river basin, with rare bottomland forests, wetlands and pools, is interwoven with countless tourist trails, offering still more interesting sights to observant visitors. The village of Vrané-Hynčice offers the family home of Johann Gregor Mendel, the world-famous founder of modern genetic science, and the visitors’ center of the Moravské Kravařsko countryside. The château in Studénka holds a museum of railway carriages, much sought after by technology fans. Many locations in the region offer beautiful views, such as the lookout tower on Bílov Hill.
