Then you will enjoy a visit to Ostravsko, a region around Ostrava, the North Moravian metropolis. The city, located near the Polish and Slovak borders, offers interesting an architectural style of unplastered brick and half-timbered masonry; historic and cultural heritage monuments; attractive national and international events and festivals; countless leisure activities in the city and its environs; as well as unique industrial monuments, evidence of the city’s long coal mining and steelmaking tradition.

If you truly wish to experience the times when coal ruled and steel reigned over Ostrava, pay a visit to Ostrava-Vítkovice with a preserved original industrial city complex with a mining settlement and church; or the hill of Landek in Ostrava-Petřkovice, one of the most important archeological sites in Central Europe, with a unique mining museum in the premises of the former Anselm coal mine.

  • Ostrava – the third-largest city in the Czech Republic. One of its oldest monuments is the ruin of Slezskoostravský Castle with historical exhibits, while the building of the Puppet Theater, built in 1999, is an excellent example of contemporary architecture.
  • New City Hall – a dominant feature of the modern city architecture, built in 1925-1930; the largest city hall complex in the Czech Republic, as well as the highest city hall in the country, thanks to its 85-meter glassed-in tower. The tower offers a view of the city and its environs.
  • Ostrava Museum – historic and natural science exhibitions. A glass floor covers the remains of a 14th century house, uncovered during the last reconstruction. The museum also holds a glockenspiel with 22 bells.
  • Landek Mining Museum – the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic documents the history and technological development of coal mining in the Ostravsko-karvinský mining district, and mining in the mine tunnels. The museum is located at the foot of Landek Hill; there are an educational trail and a view tower on the top of the hill. A rope center offers various sports, adventure and entertainment outdoor and indoor programs for both groups and individuals, with a number of accompanying activities.
  • Černá louka Exhibition Ground – state-of-the-art exhibition premises in the center of Ostrava. The historic cellars hold an exhibition of fairytale creatures. An interesting miniature town, Miniuni – scale models of major European cities.
  • Slezskoostravský hrad – the oldest historic monument in Ostrava, recently renovated. Exhibitions documenting the history of the castle and the city; castle dungeons with witches; aquariums with freshwater fish; and a castle gallery. The castle holds several cultural festivals and funfairs throughout the year.
  • Cathedral of the Holy Savior – a three-aisled cathedral with two spires in Neo-Renaissance style, the second-largest cathedral in Moravia and Silesia, after the Velehrad basilica.
  • Ostrava Zoo – vast premises in a mixed forest park with ponds and meadows, located in the Stromovka city district. Playing, relaxation and refreshment facilities available.
  • Poruba Summer Water Park – the largest nature water amusement park in the Czech Republic and Central Europe. Three swimming pools, a 100-meter water slide, and artificial surf. Separate mini-golf facilities, tennis courts with an artificial surface, streetball field and a beach volleyball court, table tennis, mini-soccer.
  • The Michal Mine – national cultural monument. An excellent example of the technological architecture of the 1920s. Mining stopped in 1993. The exhibition documents the last working day in the mine, emphasizing the authentic atmosphere, with great attention to detail. The premises have applied for registration in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • Lázně Klimkovice – a modern iodine spa, following the tradition of its older counterpart in Darkov. The unusual modern architecture respects the nature of the original forest grounds.
  • Ostravar Brewery – guided tours of the brewing house, lager cellar, filtering room, and the Brewery Museum in the old brewing house; beer tasting.
