Pilsen region and Český les

Founded by King Wenceslas II in 1295, Pilsen is the cultural, political, and business centre of the entire region. The city grew out of practically nothing and its medieval grid layout around a central square was so good that to a large extent it still meets the requirements of a city in today’s world.

One of the largest squares in the country is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of St Bartholomew boasting a 102m-high spire and the famous Pilsen Madonna. From the spire you can look down on the historical centre with its town hall, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque townhouses and the Great Synagogue. And don’t forget the surroundings of Pilsen, over which the dark silhouette of Radyně Castle keeps watch. In the deep forests of the Brdy Hills you will discover a superbly preserved water-powered smithy in Dobřív, and beyond a stretch of pine forest to the north you will stumble upon Plasy Monsatery and chateaux in Manětín and Mariánská Týnice. The valley of the River Mže is for anyone who likes water sports; Hracholusky Reservoir is ideal for lazy summer days.

Brewery Museum in Pilsen – This is the only museum in the world to be housed in an original medieval brewing house. The tour takes in locations where Pilsner Urquell beer has been brewed since the very beginning and also includes a visit to the period beer cellars and a beer tasting session.

Techmania Science Centre in Pilsen – The aim of this interactive exhibition is to arouse interest in science and technology among young people and children.  In the former Škoda factory you’ll find a range of hands-on exhibits illustrating how the laws of nature work in the areas of acoustics, optics, electricity and other fields.

Pilsen’s Underground Passageways – Take a walk through the medieval underground passageways and cellars beneath the city’s historical centre.

Pilsen’s Dinopark  – This theme park housing models of dinosaurs is part of the zoo and botanical gardens complex. In addition to the various scenes, featuring a cast of carnivores and herbivores, there’s also a children’s playground, a palaeontology playground, a 3D cinema and a gift shop.

Zbiroh Chateau – This is the place Alfons Mucha produced most of his best known oils. Tours of the interior are brought to life with medieval banquets at the chateau tavern and you can also take a walk in the large chateau park and watch summertime falconry exhibitions.
