Český les – Domažlice Area (Chodsko)

This region has two completely different faces: the almost uninhabited Bohemian Forest, and just down the road the Chodsko area, peppered with places of interest. Its remoteness lends the Bohemian Forest a special charm; the area around the Czech-German border was once a hard-to-reach, sparsely populated area, which for forty years was cut off from the outside world by the Iron Curtain.

By bike or on foot you can spend whole days wandering along the winding forest trails into a land where, lost in the darkness of the forest undergrowth, lie the remains of once thriving villages, rural churches and cemeteries, silent reminders of a once populated area where time has stood still. Some villages have disappeared never to return; others are being slowly brought back to life – but just seeking them out is well worth the effort. If you are up for more exciting experiences, head for the Chodsko area, a place of fairy tales and traditional customs. Although physically it differs little from other areas, a strong vein of folk tradition is evident at every turn. There are numerous museums and famous Chod fairs and celebrations to visit, and typical local handicrafts, such as pottery and lace, make great souvenirs. History buffs might want to visit all 11 original Chod villages, the inhabitants of which once kept watch over the borders of the kingdom.

Castle at Horšovský Týn – This Renaissance pile is surrounded by a large park dotted with follies. Of its architectural features, of most note is the Gothic chapel, of which there are only two in all Bohemia; the other is at Křivoklát Castle.

Brewery Museum in Chodová Planá – Here you’ll find a museum, the original beer spa and tours of the production area. The brewery uses traditional ways of preparing its malt and produces beer in open vats. The ale takes up to three months to mature in the lager cellar.

Trade Museum in Koloveč – Here you can see workshops belonging to butchers, bakers, confectioners, cobblers, weavers, carpenters, wheelwrights and many other tradesmen. There also a barber’s shop and a hairdresser’s, a pub and a fire station. One rare sight is a mill that can allegedly transform old ladies into young girls. End your visit at the family-run potter’s workshop.
