Hradec Králové Area
Star billing here, of course, goes to Hradec Králové, the erstwhile dowry town of Bohemia’s queens. Themed walks show off countless architectural gems in various styles and periods; the most attractive places have information boards, and maps and other leaflets etc are available from the city’s information centres.
The flat area around the city is perfect for long bike trips. The Elbe flood plain and the surrounding forests are criss-crossed with cycling trails suitable for easy-going travellers and families with children. Trips can begin in the very centre of Hradec Králové; explore the medieval, Baroque and modern periods by bike before heading off in search of other interesting locations in and around the city.
Giant aquarium in Hradec Králové – This aquarium with its underwater glass tunnel enables visitors to see the flora and fauna of South and Central America with their own eyes. In addition to the giant aquarium and rain forest areas there’s also a film on U rejnoka, a place of natural beauty, and the Café Piranha.
Chateau at Hrádek u Nechanic and golf course – Sometimes dubbed ‘Hluboká in miniature’ (referring to a more famous chateau in South Bohemia), this neo-Gothic pile was built in the mock Windsor style of the mid 19th century. Its design was based on the plans for Crewe Hall in the English county of Cheshire. The large English park contains a nine-hole golf course.
Karlova Koruna Chateau in Chlumec nad Cidlinou – Karlova Koruna is regarded as one of the finest examples of so-called ‘illusive Baroque’ in Bohemia, and sports all the clever features and flourishes so typical for the architect Jan Blažej Santini. The Kinský’s grand residence takes its unusual name (meaning Charles’ Crown) from the layout created in the shape of a royal crown.
Open-Air Museum in Krňovice – Right by the Orlice nature reserve, this museum of rural structures and town dwellings from around the Hradec Králové District and the foothills of the Orlické Mountains has been growing steadily. The museum also features demonstrations of old skills and trades, old machinery and tools, orchards of local fruit, a fruit drying facility and other attractions.
