Slovácko region

The Slovácko Region is the elixir of life for all lovers of sun and relaxation – the hilly landscape of vineyards, ancient pilgrimage places and regional culinary specialties will recreate both your body and your soul. The Slovácko Region encompasses the beauty of Pálava, Chřiby, and the White Carpathians. The Slovácko Region also incorporates a set of unique folk customs such as the Rides of the King, Slovácko feasts, folklore festivals, or picturesque cellar streets in Petrov, Pavlov or Vlčnov. Slovácko Region is also a region of hospitable and kind people.

Some will be charmed by a boating trip in the Baťa chanel, others will be fascinated by folk songs, costumes, dances, festivals and traditional trades and crafts. Hundreds of kilometers of marked vineyard trails attract cyclists who want to test their fitness in the local hills. The many historic sites include the pilgrimage place of Velehrad, Buchlov Castle, châteaux in Buchlovice or Bojkovice, the zoological garden in Hodonín, the Strážná open-air museum with a rich folklore program, the unconventional archeological museum in Modrá and the museum of aviation in Kunovice.

  • Blatnice pod Sv. Antonínkem – a town with a pilgrimage chapel of St. Anthony and famous wine cellars. The Blatnický Roháč brand label wine was the first Czech wine to win a gold medal at the international exhibition of wines in Paris in 1896.
  • Buchlov Castle– one of the most massive royal castles in the Czech Republic and a monument of the Early Gothic era. Historically precious interiors containing large collections from Egypt and natural science collections, a library and an gallery of contemporary art. A Haunted Room.
  • Buchlovice Castle – a High Baroque manor designed and built in the style of an Italian villa. Extraordinary interiors. Salla terrena, tiered gardens, an English park with many rare and exotic trees, tradition of growing fuchsias.
  • Čejkovice – a 13th-century fortress built by the Order of the Knights of Temple; 650-meter cellars used to this day for the storage and maturation of wine. A theme underground wine archive and cellar wine bar.
  • Hodonín – spa town, the birthplace of T. G. Masaryk, the founder of the Czechoslovak state and the first Czechoslovak president. A town hall designed in the style of Nuremburg Art Nouveau, Museum of T.G. Masaryk, a zoological garden.
  • Baťa Channel – a technical and nature monument. 65-kilometer waterway along the Morava river, navigable around Hodonín and from Petrov to Otrokovice. Boat rentals, regular sightseeing cruises.
  • Chateau Milotice – one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in the Czech Republic. The castle grounds with a cour d'honneur, riding school, stalls and two orangeries, a French park, a pheasantry and other minor architectural sites. An exhibition of historic carriages, broughams and sleighs.
  • Velehrad – an important pilgrimage place. The first Cistercian monastery in Moravia, founded in 1205. A five-aisle basilica of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, underground catacombs and a collection of sculptures, a Cyrilka chapel with a well.
  • Mikulčice archeological site – Great Moravian settlement, one of the presumed seats of Great Moravian princes. The educational trail shows the foundations of the twelve buildings, the original foundations of the first discovered church and an exhibition of archeological discoveries.
  • Petrovské Plže – a rare complex of historic wine cellars with white lime plaster, blue underpinning and rich folk decorations. In 1983 Plže was declared the first village reservation in the Czech Republic.
  • Aviation Museum in Kunovice – a large collection of sports and military aircrafts manufactured by LET Kunovice, the Air Force weaponry. View flights in aircraft and hot-air balloons, parachute jumps.
  • Strážnice – an interesting historic town, the setting of the renowned folklore festival. The open-air museum of the vernacular architecture of South Moravia, castle exhibition of musical instruments and valuable historic library with manuscripts and first prints.
  • Modrá open-air archeological museum – a reconstructed 9th-century Slavic fortified settlement. The buildings are based on specific archeological findings and discoveries. The museum shows the everyday life of the Old Slavs, their crafts, culinary specialties, original farming products, trees and bushes, domestic animals.
  • The White Carpathians – UNESCO Biosphere reservation with many rare and valuable nature locations. A landscape of large meadows, scattered fields, orchards and pastures, which bring to mind an English park. The highest summit of Velká Javořina (970 m) has been the traditional meeting place of Czech and Slovaks since 1845.
  • Uherské Hradiště – a town with a rich history and many monuments from Great-Moravian buildings to the architecture of the town center.  Museum of Slovácko and Gallery of the Museum of Slovácko. The setting of many interesting events, such as the Summer Film School and the International Festival of Folklore Music Instruments. Uherské Hradiště and Mařetice also act as major wine-making centers. Both the historical cellars and the local wines are certainly worth experiencing.
  • Uherský Brod – the town is mostly associated with the most famous native of the region – Jan Amos Komenský. You can learn more about this eminent personality when you visit the Museum of J.A. Komenský, the leading research center of its kind in the Czech Republic.
  • Vlčnov – a village renowned for its folklore traditions, such as the Vlčnov Festival and the Ride of the Kings, which takes place every last Sunday in May.
  • Verbuňk – an improvised male dance performed in most towns and villages in Slovácko. Popular mainly among folklore dancers, verbuňk is also a natural part of the dance repertoire at every festival, wedding or grape harvest. UNESCO has appreciated the dance for its high artistic value and described it as the expression of the cultural identity of Slovácko as a whole.
