Brno and surroundings
The city of Brno, the economic and social metropolis of South Moravia, holds dozens of international trade fairs and exhibitions every year. Used to welcoming visitors from all over the world, Brno offers countless services and attractions, including a number of social and sporting events, theater productions, movie shows, shopping opportunities and various forms of entertainment. However, the true charm of the region lies in the combination of all the attractions a city can offer with a number of tourist destinations in the vicinity that will satisfy any lover of nature, biking and hiking.
Families with children will enjoy visiting the local zoo or taking a scenic cruise on the Brno dam, including a trip to the nearby romantic castle of Veveří. Just a few kilometers from Brno is the famous battlefield of Austerlitz, the place where Emperor Napoleon achieved one of his most famous victories in 1805. The region further offers beautiful chateaux, quaint historic towns, medieval monasteries, and gorgeous landscapes.

Brno – the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul; the Špilberk fortress with numerous historic exhibits; guided tours through underground casemates; the Capuchin crypt with the mummy of Baron Trenck; the Brno Fairground – a unique collection of functionalist architecture.

Kaskáda Golf Course – a 27-hole golf course and a 6-hole academy for the public, with full background facilities, located in Jinačovice, a mere 9 kilometers from Brno.

The Austerlitz Battlefield – the site of one of the most famous battles of the Napoleonic wars, which took place between Brno and the town of Slavkov (Austerlitz) on 2 December 1805. The historic site includes the Žuráň Hillock, the Santon Hill near Tvarožná, and Stará pošta near Pozořice.

The Peace Memorial – a monument located in the center of the Austerlitz battlefield above the town of Prace. An Art Nouveau chapel with a burial vault. The nearby museum holds an exhibition documenting the course of the battle, as well as the preceding and consequent events.

Chateau Slavkov – the Baroque chateau with vast French-style Baroque gardens was used to sign an armistice between France and Austria on December 6, 1805. One wing of the chateau holds an exhibition about Emperor Napoleon. There is a golf course in the park.

Stará pošta u Pozořic – a place where Emperor Napoleon spent a night in 1805; today used as a museum, restaurant and hotel.

Chateau Bučovice – a Renaissance chateau with period gardens and a monumental arcade courtyard. Vast halls with stucco decorations and Mannerist frescoes. Humorous frescoes in the so-called Hare Hall depict a world ruled by hares instead of humans.

Dolní Kounice – a picturesque town with a chateau, pilgrimage chapel, a complex of Jewish monuments, and the ruins of a medieval monastery Rosa Coeli, with the preserved Church of SS Peter and Paul. A region that produces magnificent red wine.

Ivančice – a picturesque town with a preserved historic center, the medieval Church of the Assumption with a unique Renaissance dome; an important Jewish cemetery; monuments to local natives – painter Alfons Mucha and actor Vladimír Menšík.

Nové Zámky in Nesovice – a charming manor house, one of the most perfect examples of the pure Italian Renaissance style north of the Alps.

Chateau Oslavany – a Renaissance chateau with arcades, originally a female Cistercian convent. Exhibitions of the firefighters’ museum, mining and power engineering of the Rosice-Oslavany coalfield with a mine road model; brewery with a period restaurant.

Pernštejn Castle – the romantic, fairytale-like castle is one of the best preserved European Gothic-Renaissance fortresses. Guided tours through complex period interiors; the extraordinary four seasons tower; the conspirators’ hall; exhibitions of floral decorations.

Porta Coeli Monastery in Předklášteří – a monastery founded in 1233, dominated by the Gothic-Romanesque Church of the Assumption with a unique Gothic portal. Guided tours through the capitular hall and the early Gothic cloister with a paradise garden. A museum with unique mineralogical exhibits.

Rajhrad Monastery – the Benedictine monastery, restored in the Baroque style following the design by J.B. Santini-Aichel, houses the Moravian Museum of Literature today.

Rosice – a town with a Renaissance chateau with a lovely arcade courtyard and gardens, a former residence of the lords of Žerotín.

Ruprechtov – a windmill built in 1880; a technological monument.

Těšany – a Baroque forge from the 18th century with an exhibition dedicated to the smiths’ and wheelwrights’ craft; a branch of the Brno Technical Museum.

Vyškov – a Renaissance chateau; DinoPark: educational and amusement park with moving models of prehistoric animals; water amusement park.

Villa Tugendhat – a masterpiece of functionalist architecture (1928-1930) and the most important European work of architect L. Mies van der Rohe, registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List, with original design and interiors.

Špilberk Castle – a 13th century royal castle, rebuilt into a Baroque fortress; once the most famous prison in the Habsburg Empire. A seat of the Brno City Museum since 1960.

Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul – originally a Romanesque basilica, rebuilt into a Gothic cathedral in the 13th century and restored in the Neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. Seat of the Brno Diocese since 1777.

Old Town Hall – the oldest secular building in Brno; a seat of the city’s administration from the early 14th century until 1935. A lookout tower with a stone portal by Anton Pilgram.

The Red Church – a Neo-Gothic evangelical temple of J.A. Komensky, built in the years 1863-1865 following the design of Heinrich Ferstel; one of the dominant features of the Brno ring road.

Pražák’s Palace – built in 1868-1873 in the Roman Renaissance style, designed by Theophil Hansen. A seat of the Moravian Gallery since 1990.

St. James’ Church – one of the most important Late Gothic monuments in the Czech Republic, built at the end of the 14th century. A 92-meter-tall tower, a charnel house, a tomb of Louis Raduit de Souches.

Old Brno Monastery – a monastery founded in 1323 by Queen Eliška Rejčka; residence of the Augustinian Friars since 1783. A Gothic cathedral of the Assumption – basilica minor.

Augustinian Monastery and St. Thomas’ Church – the monastery and church were founded in 1350 by the Moravian Margrave Jan Jindřich, brother of Emperor Charles IV; currently a seat of the Moravian Gallery.

New Town Hall – a former Dominican monastery with St. Michael’s Church; today a seat of the City Mayor and the City Council. A medieval cloister and historic portals.

Brno Fairground – one of the most elegant European exhibition grounds, opened in 1928. The unique collection of functionalist architecture holds approximately 50 trade fairs a year.

The Mahen Theater – a neo-Renaissance theater, designed by the famous Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner Jr. and Hermann Hellmer.

The Reduta Theater – the oldest theater building in Central Europe. W.A. Mozart was a star of its opera stage in 1789 – 1815.

The Měnín Gate – the only preserved city gate of the medieval fortification system, built in the late 16th century; holds an exhibition hall of the Brno City Museum.

The Capuchin Burial Vault – a Baroque crypt in the underground of the Capuchin monastic church, and the place of eternal rest of Baron Trenck, a famous military leader.

The Brno Dam and Castle Veveří – a vacation resort. Water sports; regular boat cruises offered from April to October. The former Gothic royal hunting castle of Veveří towers above the dam.

Masaryk Circuit – a racing track located between Ostrovačice and Žebětín, holding world and European motorcycle and car racing events; place of the annual Czech Republic Motorcycle Grand Prix.
