Frýdlant region

A characteristic region situated on the border of Bohemia. A region where the Wendish, German and Czech cultures have met. A remote region with a cool northern climate, whose history dates back to times immemorial – that is the Frýdlant Region.

The locals are very proud of their cultural roots and heritage. They say that when Frýdlant built its towns and fortifications, today’s large cities in the region were only a cluster of small villages. Frýdlant is a mosaic of fields, meadows, forests and orchards, ancient towns, villages and settlements. You can find traces of the characteristic German thoroughness here, with huge stave buildings, sturdy farms, magnificent barns, villages that are several kilometers long stretched along the watercourse of local streams, and sandstone tombstones of feudal lords. Visitors will also appreciate that the Frýdlant Region is a gateway to the most interesting sections of the Jizera Mountains.

  • Castle and Chateau Frýdlant – a Renaissance castle. The collections were made accessible to the public in 1801, i.e. for the first time in Central Europe. Collections of china and glass, furniture and furnishings. A rich collection of weaponry, a castle gallery, a remarkable collection of pipes. One of the few original castle drawbridges that are in working order.
  • Frýdlant Uplands – a picturesque, 20-meter high viewing tower at Ressel Hill (339 meters) north of Frýdlant. A tourist destination.
  • Hejnice – a border town and a major pilgrimage site called the Czech Mariazell. Large Baroque grounds with a church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, an International Center for Spiritual Rehabilitation in the adjoining Franciscan monastery.
  • Jindřichovice pod Smrkem – a museum of vernacular living, which maps the historical development of Frýdlant and the Jindřichovice Region. The exhibits include everything from large machinery to dishware, and include a detailed description of their purpose and utilization. The museum even includes a small windmill. Regular courses of traditional arts and crafts.
  • Libverda – a small spa with mineral springs, which dates back to the 14th century. Famous guests have included C. M. von Weber, Josef Jungmann, Franz Kafka, A. Humboldt, Emperor Joseph II, J. Masaryk and others.
  • Obří sud – or Giant Barrel, is a popular restaurant in the Libverda Spa in the shape of a wooden cask, the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. The terrace offers a nice view of the northern slopes of the Jizera Mountains and the Frýdlant Region.
  • Cat Stones at Libverda Spa – a cat-shaped rock. The stairway to the top of the rock is cut out in granite and the rock offers a nice view of the Hejnice Ridge. Legends say that there are many treasures hidden in the rock.
  • Nové Město pod Smrkem – a mining town with ancient tin mines. Mining galleries and adits have been preserved in Meděnec and Rapice Hill, although they are not open to the public. Several mineral springs can be found in the area. There is the Baroque Church of St. Catherine situated in the town, a Protestant church built in 1911 and Klinger’s mausoleum dated 1901.
  • Frýdlant Battlements – an interesting rock formation situated in the village of Bílý Potok (aka the White Stream). Stone battlements and crenellation made of granite towers accessible via romantic stone footbridges, an interesting view of the valley of the Black Stream.
  • Na Smrku Viewing Tower – a 20-meter-high viewing tower at the top of Smrk, the highest hill in the Czech section of the Jizera Mountains (1124 m). A magnificent view of three countries – Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.
