Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise)
The Czech Paradise area attracts visitors for a whole range of reasons. Perhaps you’re looking for an interesting trip for the kids? Well, following in the footsteps of highwayman Rumcajs is one great idea, and throw in a visit to Frýdštejn Castle or Sychrov Chateau, where many film versions of fairytales have been shot, and you’re guaranteed a successful getaway.
Are you into tracking down places with a rich history? In the Czech Paradise area you’ll find many castles, chateaux, and places of worship, as well as museums, examples of folk architecture and various themed walks inspired by the historical figure, Albrecht von Wallenstein. Of perhaps you prefer places of natural beauty rather than culture? In that case you’ll enjoy disappearing into the tranquil gorges of the Prachovské Rocks and other rock formations. Perhaps handicrafts and traditional artwork are your thing? Then come and inspect the local deposits of precious stones around Kozákov and choose some locally produced jewellery. You can visit some of the workshops where these pieces bearing a protected trade mark are made. And if you combine you visit to the Czech Paradise area with some cycling, extreme sports or a boat trip along the River Jizera, you’ll be in for a truly heavenly holiday.
Castles and chateaux – History fans can visit the following chateaux: Hrubý Rohozec, Humprecht, Mnichovo Hradiště, Staré Hrady, Valdštejn and Sychrov. Then there’s huge Castle Kost, and the ruins of castles at Frýdštejn, Vranov-Pantheon, Drábské světničky, Rotštejn, Valečov, Zbirohy and Zvířetice.
Dětenice – This is a rebuilt Baroque chateau containing a collection of weapons and hunting trophies. Popular attractions here include a medieval tavern, where special themed events take place, and the chateau brewery.
Hrubá Skála Chateau – This idyllic medieval mansion, where the Czech film version of the fairytale ‘Prince bajaja’ was filmed, is now a hotel. Visitors can climb the viewing tower, explore a medieval tavern and clamber around a rope centre. In summer there are entertaining events with a historical theme.
Žlutá Plovárna at Malá Skála – This is a sports and recreation centre beneath the ramparts of Vranov-Pantheon Castle. Here you’ll find a rope centre, boat, raft kayak, cycle and sports equipment hire, several courts and sports grounds, refreshments and a children’s playground.
