Česká Lípa District
On your wanders through this region you will discover a landscape with many different faces – large oak forests, widescreen views from the peaks of the Lužické Mountains, shady sandstone gorges, the rounded cones of long-since-extinct volcanoes in the České středohoří mountain range and numerous lakes, the most prominent being Máchovo Lake, all connected by streams, gullies and canals.
This is a region crammed with ancient castles which still attract a crowd of dreamers and romantics. Many locations bring to mind poet Karel Hynek Mácha (1810–1836), the king of the Czech Romantic movement. He took a liking to the area to such an extent that he set his best known work, a poem entitled ‘May’, at Doksy and Bezděz, Berštejn and Ralsko castles. The locals rewarded the poet by renaming a large lake Máchovo Lake (Mácha’s Lake) and creating the Mácha Way from Mělník to Doksy via Kokořínský Mine, Houska and Bezděz. Since 1961 the area around Máchovo Lake has been called Mácha’s Country in his honour.
Castles, chateaux and ruins – Every castle and mansion has a rich history behind it and an inimitable atmosphere; many are steeped in legend. In this region why not visit Lemberk Chateau, Grabštejn Castle with its painted Renaissance Chapel of St Barbora, Bezděz Castle, the mysterious Houska Castle, and the ruins of Ralsko, Děvín, Jestřebí and Starý Berštejn.
Máchovo Lake – This is a large lake with the Staré Splavy leisure centre on its banks. Two small islands called Myší and Kachní are important sites for birds. In summer regular cruises set off across the lake and in winter one can skate here.
Panská Rock near Kamenický Šenov – Dubbed the ‘stone organ’, this is the oldest and best known geological reserve of a volcanic origin in the country and boasts 12m-tall perpendicular columns of basalt rock. At the top stand the ruins of a medieval castle, from which there great views of the surrounding area.
