The Prague Bells Exhibition

Premiere type: Monuments and history. We recommend for: Relaxing holiday.
Announced: May 2008

Within the tower of Saint Nicholas’s cathedral in Prague, you can visit a unique exhibition called “Prague Bells”. The exhibition is situated in the narrower tower of the cathedral, which previously served as a watchtower for the Malá Strana quarter. Visitors can learn more about the history of the tower at its entrance.

The first floor is dedicated to the production of bells and the history of Prague’s bell foundry. Here you will find precious authentic and historic exhibits related to the production of bells.

Rooms on the second floor used to be the dwelling of the watchman, whose duties were strictly specified. The historic furniture indicates how modest the living conditions were. Visitors are provided with a list of all kinds of bell ringing peals and everyone can play the interactive carillon, as well as listen to the sound of the death bell, the alarm bell or the church bell. In the adjacent part of the exhibition, bells are presented as magic items through the best-known stories and legends. Whilst climbing the staircase to the next floor of the tower, you can admire the original bell, called Nicholas, which has been hanging in the tower for more than 400 years.

The exhibition culminates on the gallery of the tower from which there is a beautiful view of the panorama of Prague towers. Visitors can borrow an audio device that allows them to hear bells ringing from 13 different churches, the buildings of which can be located according to the information panels on the banister of the gallery.
