In the past, the underground in a town was often built for its strategic importance. In times when a town was besieged or defeated, this was inhabitants’ last means of escape. Proof that Znojmowas well prepared is borne out by air shafts, cellar fireplaces and several wells. Znojmo tunnels, which are 25 kilometres long, are the longest tunnels in the Czech Republic and form a labyrinth of corridors.
