Prague - The First Courtyard of Prague Castle

The first courtyard is for many tourists the first part of the castle they visit and it comprises of the main entrance to the area of Hradčanske square. They are seperated by a gate which is decorated with ancient fighting giants from Ignáce Platzera. By the bars of the entrance gate stands the castle guard. The space between the I. and II. courtyards are seperated by Matyášova’s gate which is today incorporated into Theresian wings.

You can climb two flights of steps to the Castle from Malá Strana. The steps on the tour which are called ¨New¨ were actually built at the end of the 13th century and are in fact older than the ¨Old Castle Steps¨.
